HSBC Championship: Fery into the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club

Arthur Fery reached his first ATP 500 quarter-final after overcoming veteran Adrian Mannarino in straight sets at The Queen’s Club, describing it as his ‘best result of my career’.

Having received a wildcard for the main draw, the British number five dispatched the Frenchman 7-6(7), 6-4 in his first appearance on the Andy Murray Arena to book his spot in the final eight of his home tournament.

He was the remaining Brit left in the singles draw after Cameron Norrie was defeated by Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday, and although Fery has recorded a win in the first round at Wimbledon last year, beating a top-50 opponent at the time in Alex Popyrin, he revealed that Wednesday’s victory at the west London club just edges that.

“It’s special to be playing in London where I grew up and in front of all these British tennis fans,” the British number five told BBC Sport.

“This is the best result of my career so far. It’s not been easy, there have been lots of ups and downs, so I’m happy to get through.”

Facing an opponent who has reached the quarter-finals at Queen’s three times in previous tournaments, the 23-year-old remained composed in a number of big moments in the first set, no less than in the tie-break, as he managed to take the first set 7-6 (9-7).

The Brit was beaming with confidence throughout the match, winning 88% of points on his first serve and has only faced two breakpoints in the entire tournament so far, and while a nosebleed at the start of the second set threatened to disrupt his rhythm, he continued ti maintain his performance and broke at 4-4 to claim a historic win in his career so far.

An impressive display in front of his home crowd comes on the back of receiving a wildcard for the men’s singles main draw at Wimbledon, while the victory sees him close in on the top-100 in the rankings – now up to a career-high of 116.

He will now face seventh seed Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-final on Friday after the Argentine beat American Jenson Brooksby 6-0, 6-4.

In the doubles, the all-Brit pair of Marcus Willis and David Stevenson have reached the quarter-final after beating Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Hugo Nys 6-4, 7-6(3).

They will be joined by Henry Patten and Neal Skupski in the final eight of the tournament after their doubles pairings claimed wins on a glorious sunny day in west London.
